In this configuration, the blades are positioned 16 cm below the ceiling. These results fully meet the thermal comfort objectives defined by the NF EN ISO 7730 standard.

Another factor is also worth considering. All have received the programme’s highest rating, Most Efficient. For spaces larger than 15 m², larger fans (for example, 1.52 m diameter) can often make better use of the air volume to be conditioned.

As a reminder, the range of models with diameters strictly greater than 1.52 m remains relatively limited.

For typical large spaces such as offices, living rooms, or classrooms with ceiling heights below 3.50 m, fan diameters are mainly concentrated in the 1.32 m and 1.52 m ranges.

1.52 m diameter fans have both advantages and limitations:

They deliver similar air speeds to 1.32 m fans while rotating more slowly. Indeed, both the Berkeley Design Guide and the French studies that have been published consider that the FCC value should be between 20 and 40%.

However, our field feedback, as well as that of AFPVP (the French Professional Association of Ceiling Fan Manufacturers), points to the same conclusion: to achieve good summer comfort performance, the FCC is ideally in the 35–40% range.

This is not an absolute threshold. A design calibrated at 34% or 41% may still perform well. However, the 35–40% range provides a robust operational benchmark for balancing airflow effectiveness, occupant comfort, and installation efficiency.

For a 1.32 m diameter ceiling fan, the theoretical coverage areas are as follows:

General formula: Area = (Diameter / FCC)²

For an FCC of 35%: Area = (1.32 / 0.35)² = 14.2 m²

For an FCC of 40%: Area = (1.32 / 0.40)² = 10.9 m²

It is therefore clear that the choice of FCC reflects a design strategy.

With an FCC of 40%, the covered cell is more compact: this corresponds to a enhanced comfort configuration, with higher air speeds and improved perceived uniformity.

With an FCC of 35%, the covered cell is larger: this corresponds to an optimised efficiency configuration, reducing the number of units required while maintaining a relevant level of summer comfort.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://www.brasseurs-air-re2020.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/6-fcc-20-et-40-pour-cent.webp” Here, we consider a room where an FCC of 40% is respected, using a 1.32 m diameter ceiling fan and an ideal shape factor of 1.

In this configuration, with the fan positioned at the centre of the cell, the blade-to-wall clearance is 0.99 m, corresponding to a blade-to-wall distance of 0.75D and an axis-to-wall distance of 1.25D.

This logic can of course be extrapolated to different fan sizes.

As a result, the Brasse limit appears to represent a lower bound.

Where feasible, a clearance of 0.75D between the blade tips and the wall will often be preferable, although site-specific constraints always take precedence.
