Popular with a number of environmental labels, such as Sustainable Buildings, HQE and BREEAM, this method not only makes it possible to approach actual consumption as closely as possible, but also to design the building envelope and systems to improve summer comfort.<\/p>\n<p>However, STD remains a model. It is not a guarantee of impeccable thermal comfort in reality.<\/p>\n<p>The tools available include TRNSYS and IESVE, but Pleiades&#8217; STD COMFIE module is recognised as the tool most commonly used by design offices in France.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text ul_item_indent=&#8221;25px&#8221; disabled_on=&#8221;off|off|off&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.21.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_4_font_size=&#8221;16px&#8221; header_4_line_height=&#8221;1.4em&#8221; background_color=&#8221;#d4f0fc&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;20px|20px|20px|20px|true|true&#8221; box_shadow_style=&#8221;preset2&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we will focus on this STD software from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.izuba.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">d\u2019Izuba \u00e9nergies<\/a> to show how to get the best out of it, specifically in relation to ceiling fan and summer comfort issues.<\/p>\n<p>The visuals are from the October 2023 update. Older versions of the software therefore look different.<\/p>\n<p>Before reading the text below, we strongly suggest that you first read our publication: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brasseurs-air-re2020.com\/en\/summer-thermal-comfort-and-ceiling-fans-can-we-measure-the-improvement\/\">&#8220;Summer thermal comfort and ceiling fans: can we measure the improvement?&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that this article is not intended to be an alternative tutorial to the Pleiades software publisher&#8217;s documentation, but rather to provide information specific to ceiling fans in an STD context.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we are seeing an increase in the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, which makes it possible to simulate air speeds with a high degree of accuracy. This technique, which is distinct from STD, is currently fairly expensive. The tool first asks you to choose an environment category.<\/p>\n<p>The choice of room category determines the maximum PPD and PMV level. These concepts for assessing thermal comfort are described <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brasseurs-air-re2020.com\/en\/summer-thermal-comfort-and-ceiling-fans-can-we-measure-the-improvement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> in the article recommended in the introduction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Level I of the ambience category is the most demanding: the percentage of dissatisfied customers is set at 6%. This indicator, calculated in the same way as in the regulations, assesses the difference between the building temperature and a comfort temperature (a temperature adapted according to the temperatures of the previous days, varying between 26 and 28\u00b0C).<\/p>\n<p>Its value represents the cumulative weighted discomfort over the year.<\/p>\n<p>The calculation method differs between tertiary and residential buildings. For the latter, adaptive comfort at night is not taken into account, and the temperature limit remains at 26\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>The DH indicator is used to value ceiling fans. In the presence of air circulation, the high comfort limit is automatically adjusted to take account of the ceiling fan. The Tmax temperature should therefore be left unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>The air speed is taken from the &#8220;Summer air speed&#8221; entered at zone level. For example, during a measurement campaign on an educational site, we observed a 25% reduction in average air speed in the presence of school furniture, which gives an idea of the effect.<\/p>\n<p>The proximity of the air blower, the presence of furniture and the position of users are all variable factors, so the air speed is not uniform throughout the zone.<\/p>\n<p>We therefore need to take an approximation of speed that is valid for most occupants.<\/p>\n<p>It is air velocity at <strong>maximum flow rate<\/strong> that should be entered under the heading &#8220;air velocity above 25\u00b0C&#8221;. It is based on recognised standards, shows important values (number of hours of discomfort), allows ceiling fans to be taken into account, and facilitates the bioclimatic design of the building, etc.<\/p>\n<p>However, the story doesn&#8217;t end there, and we believe that improvements should be incorporated into future editions of the software to optimise the way ceiling fans are taken into account:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>incorporation of the European standard EN 16798, which replaces EN 15251 ;<\/li>\n<li>integration of the US standard ASHRAE 55-2020 ;<\/li>\n<li>as a corollary, a wider range of possible air speeds in summer;<\/li>\n<li>updating graphics, for example by drawing on the open-source work of the Centre for the Built Environment at the University of California, Berkeley (PMV and Adaptive Comfort).<\/li>\n<li>energy savings from winter destratification (almost 30% in high-rise premises).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In short, the use of STD to improve building design, particularly to cope with high summer temperatures, offers excellent prospects.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text ul_item_indent=&#8221;25px&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.21.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_3_font=&#8221;|600|||||||&#8221; header_3_text_color=&#8221;gcid-70ff693f-6f97-4074-be90-9adb196c4afe&#8221; header_4_font=&#8221;|600|||||||&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||0px|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{%22gcid-70ff693f-6f97-4074-be90-9adb196c4afe%22:%91%22header_3_text_color%22%93}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\">[i]<\/a> Standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boutique.afnor.org\/fr-fr\/norme\/nf-en-15251\/criteres-dambiance-interieure-pour-la-conception-et-evaluation-de-la-perfor\/fa137894\/29781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NF EN 15251<\/a> has now been replaced by standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boutique.afnor.org\/fr-fr\/norme\/nf-en-167981\/performance-energetique-des-batiments-ventilation-des-batiments-partie-1-do\/fa187070\/85501\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NF EN 16798<\/a> (Energy performance of buildings).<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that these standards evolve less regularly than their US equivalent, <a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.ansi.org\/standards\/ashrae\/ansiashrae552020?source=blog&amp;_gl=1*1kbve16*_gcl_au*MTA1NDgzMTc2Ni4xNjk0NTI4ODYx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">l\u2019ASHRAE 55-2020<\/a>, which is considered the most relevant today.<\/p>\n<p>We previously presented these two standards in the article \u00ab\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brasseurs-air-re2020.com\/en\/summer-thermal-comfort-and-ceiling-fans-can-we-measure-the-improvement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Summer thermal comfort and ceiling fans: can we quantify our experience?<\/a>\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref2\" name=\"_edn2\">[ii]<\/a> Supported by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME), this research programme is being implemented by a consortium comprising Surya consultants, the project leader (design, research and development\/thermal-energy-environment-modelling office); LASA (private acoustics laboratory); ISEA (independent soociologist); Laboratoire PIMENT &#8211; Universit\u00e9 publique de la R\u00e9union (housing and thermal engineering); Laboratoire Eiffel a\u00e9rodynamique, a subsidiary of the CSTB group (aerodynamics-experimentation); EnvirobatBDM : (resource centre and Mediterranean sustainable building approach).
