Since last year, the City of Nice has been installing fans in classrooms so that primary school teachers can teach under good conditions.

Work is in full swing in Nice schools during the school holidays. While teachers and students are on break, municipal services take the opportunity to renovate classrooms. Eighteen of them — across nine schools (1) — were equipped with ceiling fans for a budget of €58,600 during the spring break (regardless of the weather).
“These works are part of adapting to climate change,” begins Pierre Fiori, deputy city councillor responsible for school infrastructure works. “Installing air conditioning everywhere is not possible for financial and technical reasons, but above all because it would lead to increased energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. The choice was made to proceed differently.”

He explains: “These new systems are part of a broader approach. In 2020, the City of Nice began greening schoolyards. Planting trees allows children to benefit from shade, and by removing asphalt, the soil is made permeable again and heat reflection is reduced. These measures are being implemented progressively. At the same time, all schoolyards are already equipped with misting systems.” It should be noted, however, that nursery school dormitories are air-conditioned for the comfort of the youngest children.
